So Hideous - Last Poem/First Light

#PER CHI AMA: Post-, An Autumn for Crippled Children
Da ascoltare e riascoltare all'infinito! (Francesco Scarci)

At last, the American bands have learned to play extreme music. They have gained the lessons of post-metal by Neurosis and Isis, the shoegaze by Swans and finally post-black by Wolves in the Throne Room, thus a lot of definitely good bands, are popping up like mushrooms in the scene. So Hideous, a New York band, of which I’ve already given a good review in these pages, under the name of So Hideous My Love, is in this bevy of musical reality that is gradually swelling day by day. Even without "My Love" in their name, the quartet from the Big Apple, offers six excellent pieces of emotional post black metal that promises to gain many new followers (I have already been captured). Let’s immediately say that 'Last Poem / First Light' is a great album that combines a dark post-metal sound_ with the fury of black metal and the attitude of melancholy shoegaze with the primitive vehemence of hardcore. "Rising" then "Stabat Mater", the first 2 songs, knocked me out immediately with their hyper-tonic sound, made of diabolical guitars instilled with melancholy and with a brutal vocalist, very similar to the one of Amia Venera Landscape. "Rhapsody" and the final "Glory” represent episodes of rare beauty, where the anger of the storm striking upon our heads, is tempered by the sweety elegance of gentle touches of piano and by the copious string section that accompanies this wonderful example of music. The post-rock a la *Shels, rises forcefully in the incipit of "Last Poem" where thrilling melodies ripple in the air before biting brushes depict desolate landscapes of autumn. Then the final apotheosis, with the aforementioned "Glory," the song for which I could spend a thousand words: a song where I could find all of the characteristics mentioned above, mixed and tuned to perfection in an evocative creepy ascending climax, that gives us a new exciting musical reality from the United States . To be listened and listened to forever! (Francesco Scarci)
